Dances, songs and trills of jubilation characterised the Eucharistic celebration on 29 August, the memorial of John the Baptist's martyrdom, at Risen Christ Parish in Nakwamekwi, Lodwar diocese (Kenya), when the Comboni missionary, father Mitiku Habte, celebrated 25 years of priesthood.
The silver jubilee celebration was graced by the presence of various religious men and women from different congregations. Priests from the diocese were represented by Rev. Fr. Daniel Muhame, the Judicial Vicar for the Diocese and the Vicar for the religious present in the same diocese.
Also present were father Andrew Wanjohi, provincial superior of the Comboni missionaries in Kenya, father Pius Duniya, of the Missionary Society of St Paul, father Gideon Goma, and Christians from Christ the King parish in Lokichar, where father Mitiku served when he was assigned to the diocese of Lodwar.
In his homily, commenting on the killing of John the Baptist by King Herod (Mk 6:17-29), father Daniel Muhame said: “Just as Herod beheaded John the Baptist for being truthful, we too behave like Herod when we try to silence others”.
During the thanksgiving song, Fr. Mitiku could not help dancing along to the Turkana festival songs from the choir characterized by the typical way of dancing, a rhythmic jumping up and down.
Ordained a priest on 29th August 1998, father Mitiku was destined for South Sudan, where he remained for nine years serving the people of that nation. In 2008, he went to England to attend a training course. Soon after, he was assigned to Ethiopia, where he worked until 2015. Since 2016, he has been working in Kenya.
