On December 1 in Rome, Italy, the Comboni Missionary Fr. Giulio Albanese, editor of Popoli e Missione and of other Catholic publications, received the prestigious Franco Cuomo International Award, given by the Ancislink association and named for the writer, journalist and playwright Franco Cuomo who passed away in 2007. Fr. Giulio speaks on and writes about the Africa of the past in order to describe the present and build the future. We publish a few short recent texts (in Italian) by Fr. Giulio on Africa impoverished and in need of peaceful and just avenues of development.
The fourth edition of the Franco Cuomo International Award, sponsored by the European Center for Peace and Development, was given also to the writer and magistrate Giancarlo De Cataldo, to the rector of the Roma Tre University, Luca Pietromarchi, to the director of the Stabile di Roma Antonio Calbi, to the historian Agostino Giovagnoli, to the TV journalist Adriana Pannitteri, to the artists Oliviero Rainaldi and Mario Tirelli, to prof. Francisco fr Almeida Dias, to the General Angilo Pellegrini to the Polish sculptor Krzysztof Bednarski and to the Algerian diplomat Idriss Jazairy. An acknowledgement was also given to the theater play “Mediterri-Amo: images, words and music of our sea.”
The Franco Cuomo International Award has as its objective to recognize all those forms of cultural, artistic and human expression that look at the future through dialogue and confrontation, valuing the experience of the past and the diversity in people and in world visions. This was a position in the path left by the works of Franco Cuomo who, in his novels and plays often narrated the past to speak of the present, overcoming obstacles and barriers.
The award is subdivided into four sections: Literature, Journalism and Essay, Theater and Art. The jury is made up of people from the world of culture both in Italy and abroad. At the head of the jury stand Franco Cuomo’s wife, the journalist Velia Iacovino, and his son, the young economist Alberto Cuomo. Among the members of the jury Maurizio Scaparro, Giuseppe Marra, Giancarlo Bosetti, Paolo Acanfora.
