Nine brothers working in the Comboni provinces of Brazil and Ecuador met in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil on January 11-15. Bro. Alberto Lamana Cónsola, Assistant General, traveled from Rome to be in attendance. The youngest member of the group was 35 years old Congolese Brother Kasusi Apele Antoine. The oldest, at 72, was Bro. Miguel Caballero Gómez, a Spaniard. The brothers welcomed the occasion to get to know one another and to share their missionary experiences lived in their different Latin American contexts.
Bro. Simone Bauce, an Italian, presented a synthesis of what has been said from 1990 until today at the brothers’ intercontinental meetings. Following this panoramic view, the missionaries reflected and formulated some proposals on how to improve their service on the continent.
They acknowledged that they must be involved in the vocation pastoral, in order to make the missionary brothers’ ministry better known.
In view of this, they recognized the need to ensure the preservation of the Afro-Ecuadorial Center – dedicated to the Afro pastoral, Justice and Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC) and to vocation promotion – of Guayaquil, Ecuador, as a Comboni Activity of Human Promotion (CAHP), as it is written in #45.7 of the Chapter Acts of 2015 dealing with “Evangelization and specific pastoral services,” at a continental level. To this end – they said – the Institute must ensure the proper economic and human resources.
Besides underlining the importance of networking with brothers of other continents, the missionaries thought it proper to create, at the level of Institute, a group for theological reflection on the ministry of brothers today, which should include priests, sisters and lay people as well.
The meeting closed with a guided tour of the Afro-Ecuadorial Center and of others interesting spots of the city of Guayaquil.
