The Priestly ordination of Fr. Russom Qurban Oqbamariam was preceded by two weeks of mission promotion in his own Village at Holy Savour Parish, Hamedei, in Eritrea. Some members of the MCCJ, CMS and our postulants, in collaboration with the parish priest, took part in the mission promotion, during which they explained the meaning of missionary vocation, the ministry of priestly ordination and the jubilee year of mercy.

On 13 February 2016, the Eparch Kidanemariam Yebio and all the Comboni Missionaries working in Eritrea and a good number of Comboni Missionary Sisters were present at the ordination celebration. The Church was packed to the brim and a lot of people had to attend the celebration outside the building.

Hamedei is a village situated on a mountain whose accessibility is not easy and it is also far from the centre but all the same many Christians came from the surrounding villages to attend the celebration even if they had to walk on foot for three hours or more.

The Vicar general of the eparch of Keren commented: “I have never seen so many religious men and women gathered together from so many places”. The four Eparchies of Asmara, Keren, Seganeity and Barentu were, indeed, well represented by religious men and women and members of the clergy. The celebration had a positive impact on all the participants. Fr. Russom is the first Comboni Missionary from Hamedei and we hope that his example may attract other young men and women to follow in his footsteps. God had been so good with our delegation because in the last four years he has given us four priests.
