From 9th to 15th December 2024, the 7th General Assembly of the Comboni Lay Missionaries (LMC) will be held at the Comboni community house in Maia, northern Portugal. The motto of the assembly is ‘All together for the mission’. This morning, 9th December, was dedicated to prayer. Presiding at the opening Mass was Father Fernando Domingues, Provincial Superior of Portugal.
There are a total of 29 participants – 20 CLMs and 9 Comboni missionaries – from 16 countries on three continents: Africa (9), America (9) and Europe (11). Of the five members of the current Central Committee, there are laymen Alberto de la Portilla (Spain) and Marco Piccione (Italy), and Father Arlindo Pinto (Rome), the Comboni General Council’s contact person for the CLMs.
On Wednesday 11th, there will be an online meeting with representatives of the General Councils of the Comboni Family: Comboni Missionary Sisters, Comboni Missionary Seculars, and Comboni Missionaries. On Thursday afternoon there will be a pilgrimage to the Marian Shrine of Fatima. On Tuesday and Friday, online, testimonies will be heard from CLMs working in international communities, in Mozambique, Kenya, Central African Republic, Peru and Brazil.
The main topics that will be addressed during the Assembly are: the presentation of the journey accomplished by each CLM group of the different countries during the last six years at all levels (formation, mission, economy, and organisation); reflection and approval of the LMC Statute to be presented to the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, in the Vatican; and finally, the election of the new Central Committee for the next six years.
The assembly will conclude on Saturday evening, 14th December, with Mass presided over by Father David Domingues, Vicar General of the Comboni Missionaries. The next day, Third Sunday of Advent and International CLM Day, Father David will also preside Mass in the presence of the assembly participants, together with the people of God, in the chapel of the Maia house.
