The first semester of the new BSc in Nursing started on Saturday 4th June 2022 at Comboni College of Science and Technology (CCST). The inauguration of this new program started with the welcoming words of the Dean of the College, Prof. Abdel Rahman Al-Khangi.
The Principal, Fr. Dr. Jorge Naranjo, who presented the vision of Comboni for Africa and how the College tries to develop this vision through its different academic programs. The Program Coordinator, Halima Ali, PhD, and the Head of the new Department, CNS Geraldine Damanhuri, introduced the program and the teaching staff to the students.
Sister Tsega Haile, a Comboni Missionary Sister working at St. Mary´s Hospital in Khartoum, shared her experience as a nurse and the meaning of being a nurse. This hospital will host the students in their clinical practice. Nurses from England and New Zealand also shared their experiences through video messages. They encouraged the students and expressed their readiness to support our program.
Elisabetta Marzo,PhD, a nurse from Milano (Italy), explained the role of her NGO, AISPO, in supporting the training of the College mentors who will follow up the clinical experiences of our students and their tutors in the hospitals. The application of this mentorship system will also help the hosting hospitals to develop their own staff which is also an expression of the work based methodology of the program. The College also has the support of the British NGO Books2Africa that already sent four shipments of 1,000 books each to create an updated library for the new students.
Another partner of this network is the Spanish company Proeduca, owner of UNIR university in Spain and MIU Miami City University. The company is providing different courses for the professional development of the College staff, particularly for the nursing staff, aiming at creating a department of online programs.
In one year’s time, this BSc in Nursing should move to the new premises, now under construction inside the Comboni Sports Grounds.
