On January 7, 2017 the Comboni missionary Pedro Salvador Mateo was ordained a priest by the imposition of hands and the prayer of consecration of Bishop Rosolino Bianchetti of El Quiché in the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle in the city of Chichicastenango, El Quiché, Guatemala. Fr. Pedro is a native of Chuchipacá, a small and pleasant town located about 80 miles from Guatemala City and known for the cultivation of apples and peaches. Most of the Comboni Missionaries working in Central America and several priests from Quiché attended the ceremony.
The Christian experience of this diocese of El Quiché is marked by the witness of hundreds of martyrs who shed their blood during the conflict that afflicted Guatemala in the 1980s.
Today it lives on with a new commitment to the poorest and practicing an integral evangelization, based on the vast cultural richness of the local people and thanks to an abundant increase of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.
The celebration was immersed in color and music, typical of the Maya Quiché culture.
The petitions and the readings were proclaimed in the local language.
In his homily, Bishop Bianchetti reminded the people of the missionary commitment of all Christians both within and outside the diocese. After the Mass, a reception took place at Chichicastenango city hall.
The following day, Fr. Pedro Salvador celebrated his first Mass in his native town, surrounded by his family and about 25 priests who processed through the town from the residence of the Salvador family up to the local church.
In a few days, Fr. Pedro will leave for Costa Rica, his first assignment.
