Yesterday, Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako wrote a letter to Fr. Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie, Superior General, informing him of his resignation as Archbishop of Khartoum and expressing his gratitude, first of all to have had in his diocese the Comboni missionaries: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve God and his people with personnel from your Congregation in this Diocese. I am deeply grateful for their leadership and witness to Christ in their ministry, which has been a gift to this Church and the country at large”. Cardinal Zubeir ends his letter with the hope and prayer that the Comboni Institute may continue to support his successor with the same spirit.

Subj: Thanksgiving

Dear Reverend Father Tesfaye,
As I retired yesterday on the Feast of Christ the King from being the Archbishop of Khartoum, I feel to express words of gratitude to you.

It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve God and his people with personnel from your Congregation in this Diocese. I am deeply grateful for their leadership and witness to Christ in their ministry, which has been a gift to this Church and the country at large.

They have helped in the realization of God's Plan of Salvation for all nations at all times, by heeding St Daniel Comboni's appeal, who inspired by God called the whole Church to come to Africa and preach the Gospel.

The Catholic Church in Sudan has had a rich history of being blessed by the presence of consecrated women in religious communities: "In Africa, the Missionary Sister is the shield, strength and guarantee of the apostolic ministry" (St. Daniel Comboni Letters No. 5284 5442).

Consecrated people have taught and formed countless young people in our schools, and assisted them in building up their lives. Many of us have been taught, formed and inspired by men and women religious. I appreciate their kindness and love in fulfilling their Charism in this Church. "Let the missionary be happy in sowing the seed aware that it will bear fruit only in the future" (St. DC Letters No. 2700).

I pray that your Congregation may continue to support my Successor in the same spirit and may God give you wisdom, courage and strength to be faithful to the awesome calling you have received from God the Father. Thanks, and God bless you.
Gabriel Cardinal Zubeir Wako
Archbishop of Khartoum
