The Kenyan Comboni Province will have an ordination spree this month. Three priestly ordinations are on the table. Fr. Benjamin Avoga’s ordination was the first on 9th October. The last two will be held on 22 and 29 October respectively. Typical African singing and dancing marked Fr. Benjamin’s ordination. A mammoth crowd converged at St Joseph’s Parish in Nyamira County to witness the colorful event. Nyamira County is located in the Western part of Kenya about 305Km from Nairobi, the Capital.
Among the distinguished guests present was a contingent of local government authorities led by the governor. A vibrant Pokot group from West Pokot where Fr. Benjamin did his missionary service was also in attendance to give their support.
In his homily, Bishop Joseph Mairura of Kisii diocese reminded the assembly that God is the master of history and cares about each and everyone. He also gave a vote of thanks to the people that have helped Fr. Benjamin in his vocation journey. He laid stress on Fr. Benjamin’s parents as the first formators.
Furthermore, he explained the three fold ministry of Jesus in which every priest shares as Priest, King and Prophet. The bishop also expounded on the nature and meaning of the Priesthood with emphasis on service in the church. He urged the newly ordained to be committed in his ministry after the example of St Daniel Comboni. “Thanks for giving us and getting a missionary in our diocese”, said bishop Joseph Mairura.
Fr. Benjamin is the first priest from his parish. This coupled with the meaningful presence of Comboni fathers; brothers, sisters, scholastics and postulants who traveled hundreds of kilometres to witness the ordination left an indelible Comboni missionary spirit on the faithful of St Joseph-Nyamira Parish.
At the end of the Mass, Fr. Joseph Maina, the Provincial thanked the parish community for the support and preparation they had put into the event. He also informed them that the newly ordained has been assigned to Mozambique.
Certainly, the singing and dancing will continue to reverberate in the minds and hearts of those who attended this ordination. Many were impressed. A sense of joy and gratitude enveloped the atmosphere.
