The Confrères responsible for our publications in Europe – Germany (DSP), Spain, Italy, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom and Ireland (LP) – met for their annual Assembly from May 26th/30th in London. The theme chosen for this year’s reflection was, “The New Evangelization and our Means of Social Communication” and was led by Br. Enzo Biemmi, a Religious from the Congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Family.

The Confrères and some of the laity who work in the field of Mass Media in the Provinces of Europe held their annual meeting from May 26th/30th at the ‘High Leigh Conference Centre’ in Hertfordshire near London to present reports on their work and to share experiences and ideas regarding the many challenges that the world of social communications and, in particular, those of the digital age, pose to our work of Evangelization and Missionary Animation in Europe today.
The Vicar-General of the Congregation, Fr. Alberto Pelucchi, the Provincial Superior of Portugal, Fr. José da Silva Vieira, the Provincial of the London Province (LP), Fr. Martin James Devenish, and two Comboni Missionary Sisters, Sr. Elisa Kidane and Sr. Paola Moggi, representing “COMBONIƒem” also participated in the Meeting. Unfortunately Fr. Jorge Oscar García Castillo, the General Secretary for Missionary Animation, was unable to be present due of his poor state health.
Apart from the reports on every publication, printed and on-line, by their respective Directors, Fr. Carmine Curci spoke briefly on his work with the Missionary News Agency, MISNA, and presented the evolution of the on-line web magazine in English, “SouthWorld”, an initiative of the Provinces of Europe. Fr. José Vieira – the Co-ordinating Provincial for the Sector in Europe – informed the gathering that the Provincials of Europe had decided, by a unanimous vote, at their Meeting in February to approve the creation of a ‘European Media Centre’ associated with the initiative of the “SouthWorld” Web Magazine, which is already four years old.
Fr. Pelucchi asked the participants to reflect as a group, in view of the forthcoming General Chapter in 2015, on three points: what relationship exits between our Media and Missionary Animation; what vision of Mission do we communicate in our publications, and thirdly, what Kerygma do we announce taking into consideration the social, economic, cultural and ecclesial reality of Europe today.
The evaluation of the Meeting was very positive and Fr. John Downey and Martin Devenish merited the applause of the participants for the gracious hospitality and efficient organization of the encounter. The next Meeting, as suggested by those present, will be held at the end of February 2015 in the Mother House of the Comboni Missionary Sisters in Verona and the principal theme on the Agenda will be the request made by Fr. Pelucchi.
