At the end of the assembly of the Comboni Missionaries who work among the indigenous people of the American continent, which took place in Mexico City on February 18-23, the participants sent an open letter to all the confreres of the Institute. The commitment to the indigenous people is, together with the work among the Afro-descendants and among the people in the slums of the urban areas, one of the priorities of the American continent. In attachment we publish the letter in Spanish.
The letter of the Comboni Missionaries who work among the indigenous people of the American continent underlines the socio-economic and cultural challenges facing the indigenous people of the Americas and expresses the desire that the Comboni Missionaries may play an active part in shaping their destiny. Furthermore, the confreres commit themselves to identify, in their respective provinces, the people who suffer the most from neglect and from the destruction of their cultural and environmental heritage and to acquire an attitude of listening, respect and knowledge of their habits and customs; they take up the responsibility to cooperate in the building up of a true indigenous and ministerial church and to join their desire for justice and the acknowledgement of the rights of indigenous people, by being available to facilitate a dialog with various organizations of society in order to inform and prophetically denounce any type of repression. The letter points out how the indigenous people, by their life style, play an important role in the construction of a more just and peace loving society.
