Formation option with regard to scholastics and scholasticates

The morning of September 11 Fr. John Baptist Keraryo Opargiw (in the photo), secretary general of basic formation, presented three themes that the Intercapitular Assembly should evaluated and reach some conclusions. The themes are: the Missionary Service of the scholastics, before and after their theological studies; the Continentality of the Scholasticates; the Insertion of the Scholasticates. The afternoon the work was by language groups with concrete questions that will help reach orientations to eventually be voted in the assembly.
Fr. John Baptist presented the three formation themes – Missionary Service, Continentality of the Scholasticates and Insertion of the Scholasticates – with enough space in between to give time to questions, explanations and comments. For all the themes Fr. John Baptist followed the same methodology of presentation: an historical summary of what has been said in the General Chapters (1997, 2003, 2009); in the Intercapitular Assemblies (2000, 2006); in the General Assemblies of Formation (1999, 2005, 2011); in the Continental Assemblies of Superiors of Circumscriptions; in the Assemblies and Continental Councils of Formation (2010, 2011, 2012);and in the general inquest made among the confreres, including the scholastics (2012).At the end of the presentation of the themes the secretary general of formation left time for some personal proposal on the part of the members of the Assembly.
On the questions under discussion, Fr. John Baptist said: “the decision to introduce the missionary service came after long reflection, discernment and execution ad experimentum, there is sufficient consent on its validity as formation and it would be convenient to concentrate the discernment and the vote on the value of the missionary service; consultation at various levels shows consent on the intercontinental scholasticates, so that I propose that the Assembly move in that direction. The General Council will use the recommendations of the Superiors of Circumscription and of the Father Masters in assigning the neo-professed.”
After group work, their common sharing and a long session in the assembly, the 29 provincials and delegates present at the Intercapitular Assembly voted on some proposals that will help the GC orient its decisions.
