“With much effort we have managed to have the platform of the virtual library. We hope that you will like it. We move at a snail’s pace, scanning and digitalizing all the material we have – books, pamphlets, videos in VHS form, and others – and we will continue to add to it gradually,” so said Fr. José Joaquim Luis Pedro, director of the Afro-Ecuadorian Cultural Center (CCA) and the person responsible for evangelization in the Comboni province of Ecuador. The CCA in Quito, Ecuador, already has its virtual library and it is in the process of linking with the Afro library of the CAEDI of Bogota, Colombia and Salvador Bahia, Brazil. The initiative of opening a library online in Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil is a decision of the Comboni Missionaries who work in the Afro pastoral at continental level.

The Afro pastoral is one of the priorities of the Comboni provinces of Latin America. In Ecuador, two communities are totally dedicated to the Afro-descendants.

Fr. José Joaquim Luis Pedro, director of the Afro-Ecuadorian Cultural Center (CCA), explains the reasons that brought the Comboni Missionaries to make this option: “The idea is to establish a network between the three libraries – Quito, Bogota and Salvador Bahia – in order to propagate all the Afro-American literature and thus create an awareness of the situation of the Afro-descendants, a kind of mission promotion for them.
Daniel Comboni is the one who inspires us to continue to look for new initiatives not only in order to reach the Afro-descendants and help them convert into the protagonists of their own history, but also to awaken the awareness of many with regard the situation of these our brothers.”

Fr. José Joaquim invites all to visit the library online, while asking the cooperation of anyone who may be able to contribute new material: “You may visit our library and download the material you need; send us other links of virtual libraries dealing with the topic of the Afro-descendants. We will upload many of our books in PDF form and some you will be able to download for free. Other material, for which we will post an index and a summary, will be sent, upon request, and at low cost. The Library will hold exclusively books, pamphlets and audio-visuals. News items over activities of the Afro-descendants and other activities of the Afro pastoral will be published on our internet page.”
