The Comboni missionary, Fr. Fernando González Galarza, has written and published a book on evangelization in South Sudan under the title “An Amazing Story – The beginning of the evangelisation and the Catholic Church among the rural Western Nuer”. This book was first published in Spanish and launched in Mexico some years back by the same author under the title “Con la fuerza de espíritu” (With the power of the Spirit). It narrates the arrival of the Gospel and the beginning of the Church on the western bank of the Nile in Unity state. This large area compromising of four counties eventually became St. Joseph Parish (Leer mission) following the arrival of the missionaries. It is where Fr. Fernando currently works as an evangeliser.

Comboni missionary,
in South Sudan.
The preparatory work for the foundation of the Church in that area was entirely done by ordinary lay people, mostly local catechists, who experienced a new life in Jesus Christ and became missionaries among their own people. The book describes how these lay men and women in their simplicity and moved by the power of the Holy Spirit worked wonders for the Kingdom of God.
Fr. Fernando had previously published another book in Mexico under the title “ON THE LIMIT – a Mexican missionary in the war zone”, which narrates his first missionary experience in South Sudan before its independence in 2011. The author is also member of a team of Nuer catechists that has published about twenty books all in Nuer language to be used as tool for the spreading of the Christian faith and pastoral work, including liturgy.
Fr. Fernando is convinced that God endows people with gifts to serve the mission of the Church in different ways. He is using his gift as missionary and writer to share the joy of evangelising in South Sudan despite hardship and adversities.
