Comboni Fr. Miguel A. Villegas Serrano (1943-2013) passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 70 years of age, after a long and painful illness. He is survived by his mother, age 91, and six sisters (picture). Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Covina, Calif. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 12:30 p.m. May he rest in peace.
After his ordination to the missionary priesthood in 1969, Fr. Miguel spent six years in his native Mexico as a formator and magazine editor. After having learned Arabic, in 1978 he was assigned to teach at the Comboni College of Khartoum, Sudan. By 1984 we find him in the Los Angeles area as formator of young Hispanic missionary aspirants and deeply involved in the youth pastoral plan of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
From 1997 to 2011 he was totally dedicated to the Comboni publications, first in Mexico and then in Peru. In 2012 he was assigned to the community of Covina, Calif. where he soon became very well known for his contagious enthusiasm for the missionary cause and as editor, once more, of the Comboni magazine. In spite of the growing amount of physical pain he was enduring, he worked at his task up until a week before his untimely death.
